Classes
Group Lessons
Skaters receive group instruction using the U.S. Figure Skating curriculum. Each week, skaters have a 30min lesson and 30min supervised practice. Class placement determined by skill level and age. See registration form for curriculum and class placement.
Power, Edge, & Style
Build stamina and power while learning proper edge technique and skating form. Includes exercises, games, and introduction to skating style. Open to skaters Basic 4+ and Adult 3 - 4. Must be signed up for group lessons to enroll.
Strength & Stretch ~ NEW!
Introduction to strength, flexibility, and skating-specific exercises to make your practice more effective. Class meets upstairs at the arena. Open to Basic 3+ and all adults. Bring tennis shoes &
a towel or yoga mat.
Adult Fitness Lunch Hour ~ NEW! YMCA Collaboration
How many miles can you skate? Improve your fitness with our weekly lap class. Includes basic instruction, goal-setting, and lap skating. Coffee hour to follow upstairs.

Competition Prep Class ~ NEW!
Prepare with your buddies for a local competition! Skaters will train both on and off the ice in preparation for the Farmington Spring Fesival. Focus is on performance skills, preparing a solo
routine, mental skills training, and of course, fun! Meets weekly for 6 weeks at the Schmitz-Maki Arena in Farmington. Begins second week of February. Competition fees, outfit, & ice fees to the Tri-County skating club additional. Must be enrolled in group lessons.
Events
Open House/Registration - 9/23/08:
Learn what NSS has to offer or turn in your registration form. Held at the Armory, 519 S. Division St.
Parent Mtg & Volunteer Orientation - 10/14/08 & 1/6/09:
Designed to familiarize parents with NSS, including new policies and classes. New parents expected and returning parents strongly encouraged to attend. Held at the Armory.
Girl Scout Skating Fever - NEW - 10/12/08 & 1/4/09:
Join the NSS staff to explore the sport and performing art of skating. On and off-ice events and merit badge included. Register with Cannon Valley Girl Scouts by 9/19.
Spirit Night - NEW - 12/3/08:
Join us for dinner at Beef O’ Brady’s & show your NSS spirit! A portion of each meal’s cost will be donated to NSS.
Winter Walk - 12/4/08:
Team up with Northfield Dance Academy to perform a “santa” dance on Division St. Sign up in late October.
Bring a Friend Day - 12/14/08:
Show your friends what you’ve learned! Give them a chance to try skating! All skaters invited to bring a buddy.
Holiday Skate - NEW - 12/21/08:
Celebrate the holiday season with music, crafts, and open skating with NSS instructors. Friends & family welcome.
Carleton Skating Night at the Depot - NEW - 1/14/09:
Join the Carleton community (students, staff, alumni, etc) for a night of skating at the Depot Ice Rink in downtown Minneapolis, named one of the top 10 best places to skate by USA Today and MSNBC. Enjoy open skating with lights and music, informal lessons, and demonstrations by NSS staff and skaters. Co-sponsored by the Northfield Skating School and the Carleton College Alumni Affairs.
Off-Ice Workshop - 2/1/09:
Introduction to proper stretching, warm-up, and off-ice skating exercises. Adapted for all skaters. Held at Carleton.
Applebees Pancake Breakfast - NEW - 2/7/09:
Enjoy a delicious breakfast and help NSS raise funding for scholarships and special events.
Tall & Small Day - NEW - 3/8/09:
Kids, bring your favorite adult, and adults, pair up with a special youth for this new event.
End-of-Season Party - 3/9/09:
Celebrate your hard work with a dessert potluck party. Games, coloring, videos, and a raffle. Held at Emmaus, 712 Linden St. N, Nfld
Farmington Spring Festival - 3/28/09:
This local competition features skaters from across MN. Prepare a solo routine in our competition prep class or come cheer for your fellow skaters.
Broadway On Ice - weekend of 5/30/09:
Experience the thrill of skating in a full-blown production. All levels welcome. Rehearsals and show take place at Shattuck St. Mary Skating Academy in Faribault. Register in January. Rehearsals on Saturday mornings beginning May 3.
